I read somewhere recently about the many and varied lawsuits
that Courtney Love is involved with. She's suing Universal
Music, the surviving members of Nirvana, challenging contract
laws in the state of California
Now, I'm not a litigious person by nature, so I had a hard
time figuring out why someone who clearly had the bread to
retire and spend the rest of her years relaxing would spend
the time, effort and money to fight all these different causes. But
as I read on, I began to see that she's not fighting a collection
of different causes at all, but the same cause on different
fronts.
As I read on, it became clear that she was attempting to
single-handedly fighting the good fight on behalf of the other
artists out there, most of whom prefer to play the role of
professional victims. This I like. This I admire and respect.
But her detractors accuse her of being only in it for the
money (note: she already has money!), being only in it for
fame (note: she already has fame!), being in it to cause trouble
(ok - they may be on to something there), and not being punk
rock in her ideology anymore (if they grant that she ever
was in the first place).
Now there's always been this shit flying around about which
bands are punk rock, and the 101 ways that they can fuck up
and lose this precious credibility, blah blah blah. Play to
more than ten people - you're out. Make more than ten bucks
- you're DEFINITELY out. Wind up retiring young without dying,
going bankrupt, or having a nervous breakdown - again, out
on all counts. So really, if you succeeded in any way and
all of your cronies didn't, then you had to pay the success
tax - you lost your credibility.
All the loser, pseudo-intellectual maximumrockandroll reading
dipshits out there are all so busy sucking bands dicks, and
then turning on them afterwards, that they don't see the point.
To me - the purest punk rock act is to take on the big bad
'Establishment' in any way you can. If it's through music,
great. If it's through speech, great. If it's through articles
like this, great. If it's through lawsuits against dick head
entertainment moguls - great. Who cares? The point is the war,
not whether you arm yourself with rocks, knives, or guns.
And in the great tradition of mavericks like Larry Flynt,
she is being vilified by the people she aims to help most.
Note to bands: listen to the points she's making. Imagine
yourselves in these same predicaments, and imagine how you
would feel. If life hands you a powerful ally with the balls
to change the world, embrace her.Courtney - if you happen
to be reading this, forgive them, for they know not what they
do.
